Information regarding the National Team
In this section the requirements for being called to the Austrian National Team for the IYTP 2007 in Seoul (Korea) are discussed. Furthermore an overview of the scheduled preparatory work and information on the travel details are given.
All Austrian Teamleaders are asked to carefully study the information on this page and discuss it with their students. By doing so they should clarify which students fulfill the requirements for being called to the National Team.
Basic Requirements
The following basic requirements have to be fulfilled in order to be considered for the Austrian National Team.
- Participation in the AYPT 2007 as a member of a non-foreign team
- Regular student at an Austrian secondary high school in the school year 2006/07
- Participation in the scheduled preparatory seminars (details see below)
- Agreement with the travel details (see below)
- Written approval of parents (or legal guardian)
The Executive Committee will choose the members (and backup members) of the National Team among those students who fulfill all the requirements. (Confer: AYPT-Regulations and Articles of Association)
Note: The Executive Committee reserves the right to prescind from some of these requirements in reasonable cases (especially in case of unforeseeable drop out of team members), if necessary.
IMPORTANT: All AYPT participants who are interested in being nominated for the National Team and who fulfill the aforementioned requirements are hereby kindly asked to bring their (Austrian) passport, valid at least until the end of July 2007 to the AYPT, for visa application reasons.
Preparatory Seminars
The association organises two preparatory seminars to ensure optimum success at the IYPT 2007. The participation in these seminars is mandatory for all team members and backup members. In case of non-attendance the Executive Committee reserves the right to expel the affected team member from the National Team. Participants must arrive on the first seminar day not later than a reasonable time (~ 10am) and have to stay at least until a reasonable time (~ 4pm) on the last day of the seminar. If necessary an additional overnight stay can be arranged for participants with long journeys.
The preparatory seminars will be held at the follwing dates:
- Thursday, May 17th 2007 (Ascenscion Day) to Sunday, May 20th 2007
- Friday, June 29th 2007, to Tuesday, July 03rd 2007 (Departure to Seoul)
The team will depart to Seoul directly from the second preparatory seminar.
The preparatory seminars will be held at the "Schulversuchpraktikum", Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Vienna, Strudlhofgasse 4, 1090 Vienna.
The journey to the preparatory seminars has to be organized by the participants themselves. The participants will (presumably) be accomodated privately, at homes of seminar coaches.
IMPORTANT: All (Austrian) AYPT participants are asked to check in advance whether they would be able to attend the scheduled preparatory seminars. This should ensure that the Executive Committee is able to quickly nominate the members of the National Team after the end of the AYPT.
Travel Details
Costs
The IYPT 2007 takes place in Seoul (Korea). The journey will be organized by the Executive Committe, departing from Vienna International Airport and also coming back there. Unfortunately the association has insufficient funds to pay the travel costs. Therefore all participants must bear the travel costs themselves.
The costs for the flight tickets will (presumeably) be 730 Euro per person, plus approximately 90 Euro of taxes.
The costs for board and lodging during the tournament are beard by the Organizing Committee.
Departure
The team will depart from Vienna (presumably) on July 03rd 2007, directly after the end of the second preparatory seminar.
Return
The team is supposed to return on July 13th.
Additional Stay
To make the relative high travel costs more useful the Executive Committee
aims at orgainzing a few days of additional stay after the end of the tournament.
These days could be used for sightseeing, recreation, etc.
This concept has been tried and tested at the IYPT 2004 in Brisbane (Australia).
If explicitly desired one or all participants can also return immediately after
the end of the tournament.
The additional time will either be spent in Seoul (or nearby) or in Dubai,
which is an intermediate stop on the flight route.
Details will be clarified in accordance with the particpants after the nomination.
Cancellation of participation
Since there have already been concerns about the possibilty of political tensions in North Korea the Executive Committe has come to the following conclusion:
The participation of the Austrian National Team in the IYPT 2007 in Seoul (Korea) will be dependent on whether or not the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs will issue an official travel warning ("Reisewarnung").
If such a warning will be given at the time of the tournament the Executive Committee
will cancel the Austrian participation.
In case that no such warning will be given the journey will take place, regardless of how
the situation might be displayed in the media.
Making the participation dependent on an official warning has two main reasons:
First such a warning is an objective assessment of the situation and second
an official warning allows for cheap cancellation of flight tickets.
Therefore we ask for understanding.
Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous information (necessary inoculations, visa formalities, etc.) will be published soon.
